A CPAP is a respiratory support device for premature babies, the pictures below show the User Interface design which comprises of two Membrane switches (flexible circuit boards). The machine was been designed for use in various countries across Asia and Africa, that’s a lot of different languages and cultures to design for, hence the User Interface doesn't rely on language to communicate to the user, but rather employs simple graphics and symbols to convey meaning. HCD workshops were conducted to find symbols that were universal in communicating the particular function or feature of the machine. Doctors and nurses of different genders, age and cultures participated, including people from Vietnam, India and Myanmar.
